August 2009, Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman
Our next meeting will be August 28, 2009 at 07:00 P.M. We will meet at the Plaza Branch Library, 4801 Main St., Kansas City, MO
We will be discussing Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. This will be the third of our planned three meetings on the book. Pick your favorite poem and share it with the group. It may appear that we are stuck in a rut of Whitman's free verse. Well, it's summer time and things move slowly in the summer and that includes our group.

NEXT MEETING:
August 28 (Friday), 7:00 p.m., Small Meeting Room, Plaza Branch Library, 4801 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64112
Subject:
Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman
NEW FACES:
We anticipate new members will be joining our next meeting. Brian has posted the August meeting of Great Books KC on "meetup.com" and a number of people have responded. Those who have attended in the past are still welcome to attend without responding the the invitation.
Click here for the latest on who has responded to the invitation.
REPORT ON OUR JULY 31 MEETING:
Our discussion included a focused interpretation of the poem "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," a comparison between Whitman and Mark Twain, and other general discussion. It was suggested for the next meeting (August 28) that attention be given to the Whitman poems that allude to sexuality and the body, and discuss the uniqueness for an 19th Century writer to delve into such topics.
SUGGESTION ON (NOT) READING ALL OF LEAVES OF GRASS:
Unless you happen to be a poetry wonk, you're probably not going to be able to read all of Leaves of Grass. My suggestion is to pick one or two poems that speak to you and come to the meeting prepared to explain why. Others may have a more creative or learned approach.
